Breach response as the tip of the spear
- What it did
- Incident-response practice under ex-FBI Shawn Henry from April 2012, before the product
- Cylance
- Did response work too (OPM, 2015), but sold a prevention claim through heavy marketing
A deliberate services line sold alongside or ahead of the product: implementation, incident response, advisory or managed delivery. The services work earns access and credibility with buyers, teaches the company what the product has to do, or makes the product usable. The return to the product business is the reason the line exists.
Services reach a buyer at a moment the product cannot, and put the company inside the customer's operation. What comes back, whether that is trust, a lead, a requirement or a reusable technique, lowers the cost of the next software sale. Services carry lower margins and headcount that does not scale like software, so the return has to exceed that drag.
