Speed

What is Speed?

The product completes the customer's core task faster than a named alternative: lower latency, less time to finish the work, or more throughput. Customers noticed the difference and cited it when they chose or stayed. Faster setup or onboarding is an adoption question, not Speed.

How Speed works

A core task repeated many times a day turns small delays into lost work and frustration. A product that is consistently faster gets chosen and kept. When the gap comes from architecture rather than tuning, the rival cannot close it quickly.

How companies won with Speed

From the win chains in Strategy Canon case studies: what the winner did, and what its rival did at the same step.

The question to ask of a company

At which core task was the product faster, than which named alternative, by how much and in which years? Did customers cite speed when they chose or stayed?

Who names it

AuthorWhat they call it / where it appears
Rahul Vohra +Speed is a feature; the 100 ms rule for interface response
Note. Needs a comparison with a named rival or prior alternative: an independent test or review, a named customer's decision, or a founder account that names the rival and the dimension. Company self-description does not count. In the competitor-pair research (September 2026), every in-period verdict that took a side on speed favored the company that won.
