Chip designers and production engineers had to reconcile what could be drawn with what a fabrication process could reliably produce. Internal trial-and-error work took time and expensive manufacturing iterations. The problem became harder as smaller process geometries introduced systematic yield losses. This later intensification is distinguished from the initial 1991 software opportunity in the founder’s retrospective account. PD1

How each step happened
Step 1 of 3 · 1991 to 2003
Take responsibility for making the method work at the fab
John Kibarian’s 2003 interview describes a shift from manufacturability software toward on-site engineering and combined yield-improvement solutions. Test chips, simulation and electrical testing helped identify production limitations. Gain Share connected compensation to delivered customer value. PD1
The original software was only one part of the buyer’s problem. Engineers needed a method that worked with their process and designs. Putting a team on site helped apply the technology, while performance-linked fees aligned the supplier with the result. This was a service-intensive product system; the account does not show that a separate consulting purchase consistently converted into a later software sale.
The founder account supplies the sequence and intended economics. It does not isolate the average yield gain or PDF’s share of the value created.
Rivals The main alternative was the manufacturer’s own trial-and-error integration. Existing EDA signoff did not by itself guarantee high production yield.
Step 2 of 3 · 2004 to 2025
Make manufacturing and test information usable together
Exensio expanded the offer into data and analytics across fabrication, assembly and test. Later products added equipment connectivity and links from factory-floor information to enterprise applications. PDF’s filing describes sales and service teams working together to expand within customer processes and technologies. PD2 PD3 PD5
A yield issue can cross organizational and equipment boundaries. Connecting and interpreting those records can be more useful than another isolated dashboard. The account relationship also exposes adjacent problems that the supplier can address. Customer-specific data connections and operating procedures create a plausible replacement burden, though data volume alone does not establish a learning advantage.
The product descriptions do not establish the size of customer savings or a firm-specific data network effect. Direct customer replacement evidence remains thin.
Rivals Internal analytics teams and equipment-specific tools are the relevant alternatives. The test is whether PDF joins information that those tools leave separate and improves an actual engineering decision.
Step 3 of 3 · 2020 to 2025
Reach test customers through an equipment supplier
In 2020, Advantest and PDF signed development and commercial agreements plus a five-year Exensio cloud subscription. Advantest also committed approximately $65.2 million for PDF equity. By 2025 PDF reported $219.0 million in revenue: $181.0 million Platform and $38.0 million Volume-based. PD3 PD2
The relationship placed PDF’s analytics inside an established test-equipment supplier’s customer proposition. It combined product integration, a paying anchor account and access to a relevant installed base. That is more substantial than an integration listing, but the initial revenue expectation is not evidence of the number of downstream customers reached.
The company’s recurring-revenue definition includes fees that have often recurred, such as runtime licenses and Gainshare. These are exposed to production and shipment volumes and should not be read as entirely fixed SaaS subscriptions. PD2
Rivals Advantest could build analytics internally or work with another supplier. Its commitment supports the partnership’s strategic importance; it does not make PDF independent of the partner’s priorities.
