In early 2023, organizations could see the potential of general-purpose language models but still faced unreliable outputs, integration work and uncertainty about sensitive data. Different tasks required different mixes of reasoning, context capacity, speed and cost. Buyers could use a direct model API, a cloud provider's service, a consumer interface or internally operated models. Existing cloud procurement and infrastructure relationships shaped how an enterprise would adopt a new supplier. The opportunity was to make improving capability useful in an actual workflow; a claim of research excellence or safety by itself would not establish that result. AN2 AN5 AN6
Anthropic
Anthropic made improving models available through enterprise buying channels, then brought Claude Code into the developer workflow.
Arena: Market Conditions Before Anthropic
What shaped the outcome
Step 1 of 4 · 2023–24
Make model improvement matter to a defined piece of work
Anthropic introduced a 100,000-token context window in 2023 and released Claude 3.5 Sonnet in 2024 with updated performance claims and an Artifacts workspace. A later a16z enterprise survey found respondents citing model capability gains as a reason for increased use, especially in software development and analysis. AN5 AN7 AN4
Longer context let a buyer attempt work involving more source material, while better output and a working interface could reduce the effort between a request and a usable result. These are concrete routes from research to customer value. They are still task-dependent: capacity does not guarantee accurate use of every token, and benchmark gains do not establish success in a customer's environment. The enterprise survey adds actual adoption context but covers a bounded cohort. The strongest explanation is recurring capability improvement that opened and improved useful workflows, rather than a permanent technical lead secured by one release.
Rivals OpenAI and Google also improve models and context. Compare performance, reliability, speed and cost on the customer's task at the same date.
Step 2 of 4 · 2023–25
Let enterprises reach Claude through infrastructure they already buy
The Amazon partnership combined investment, infrastructure collaboration and model access through Bedrock. By the Claude 3.5 Sonnet launch, customers could also access the model directly and through Google Cloud Vertex AI. Salesforce Ventures separately describes introductions to enterprise decision-makers and product relationships. AN6 AN7 AN3
Multiple routes reduce the requirement that every customer establish an entirely new infrastructure relationship. A team may choose a model while keeping procurement, identity or other controls within a cloud environment it already uses. That can widen access and shorten part of the adoption task. It also gives powerful partners a role in distribution and economics, and it does not make Claude exclusive within those channels. Investor introductions are another route to a conversation, not proof of a closed sale. Cloud availability widened access, while the volume and staying power of that business still depended on customer decisions.
Rivals OpenAI through Microsoft and models available on AWS or Google Cloud are direct alternatives. Existing cloud access can reduce friction for several suppliers at once.
Step 3 of 4 · 2024–25
Move from supplying coding tools to owning a developer interaction
Claude Code became generally available in May 2025 with developer-environment integrations and support for background work. In September, Anthropic reported more than $500 million of Claude Code revenue run rate. The enterprise survey later associated Anthropic with software development and other token-intensive work. AN8 AN1 AN4
Directly serving the developer gave Anthropic a way to package its model capabilities with the context, tools and interactions needed to act on a codebase. It also moved the company into competition with applications using its own models. A supplier can therefore benefit from third-party demand while trying to capture more of the interface and revenue itself. The growth observation supports commercial interest in that move; it does not establish that the tool always replaced an editor or that model and application margins were equally attractive. The developer still had to inspect and integrate the resulting work.
Rivals Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot and OpenAI's coding tools compete for overlapping developer tasks. The key comparison is useful completed work with acceptable supervision, not merely a benchmark score.
Step 4 of 4 · 2023–25
Keep the safety promise separate from what actually won the purchase
Anthropic and its investors emphasize safety, reliability and interpretability in explaining the company. Its September 2025 disclosure reports more than 300,000 businesses and a revenue run rate above $5 billion. The outside enterprise survey, however, attributes much of the observed adoption momentum to recent capabilities and demanding workloads. AN1 AN2 AN3 AN4
Trust can matter to an enterprise considering a new model supplier, but a company's declared research priorities are not evidence that customers selected it over alternatives for that reason. The draft therefore treats the positioning as part of the offer and tests it against actual capabilities, access and usage. This avoids both dismissing safety work and granting it an unearned moat. Strong adoption can result from several reinforcing choices while the relative contribution remains uncertain. The young-company outcome also remains distinct from the large private financing valuation: neither a funding price nor rapid annualization proves a mature scale win under this project's rules.
Rivals OpenAI and Google also sell reliability, organizational controls and model capability. Evidence of a trust advantage would require comparative buyer choice and a barrier to matching it.
