Information asymmetry

A glasses buyer needed frames that looked and felt right, lenses that matched a prescription and a price they could afford. Optical stores combined fitting with access to frames, while a low online price could leave doubts about quality and fit. Buyers could inspect and compare physical frames more easily in a store than through photographs. WP3 WP2

How each step happened

Step 1 of 3 · 2010 to 2016

Home Try-On helped a low-priced offer earn trust

Dave Gilboa and Neil Blumenthal told Guy Raz that the low price itself raised quality doubts. Home Try-On put frames in prospective buyers’ hands. The first-employee account published by Y Combinator describes the fulfillment work and early customer contact behind the service. WP3 WP2

The trial let customers judge appearance and feel before committing to prescription glasses. That made a direct offer easier to compare with an optical store. A clear starting price helped buyers understand the proposition, while the physical sample reduced uncertainty about what the price bought.

These are participant accounts of choices and early demand. They do not prove that Home Try-On was the cheapest acquisition channel.

Rivals An optical store provided immediate fitting and trusted advice. Lower-cost online rivals could compete on price, so the trial addressed a distinct obstacle to purchase.

Stores completed more of the customer’s vision-care job

Early customers sought in-person contact, according to the employee account. By the end of 2025, Warby Parker had 323 stores and an offer spanning glasses, contacts and eye exams. It opened 47 stores that year. WP2 WP1

Physical locations supplied fitting, adjustments and access to services that an online frame order could not always complete. That widened the set of buyers the company could serve. More services also created additional reasons to visit, although their separate returns need to be measured.

Store growth consumes capital and adds fixed costs. The record does not establish that each new site is incremental to online sales.

Rivals Traditional optical chains already combined stores and eye care. Warby Parker had to carry its price, design and service proposition into that familiar format rather than rely on being online.

Step 3 of 3 · 2025

The original trial gave way to a larger retail and digital system

Warby Parker ended Home Try-On in late 2025 while retaining digital tools and expanding stores. Annual revenue reached $871.9 million. The filing also records the inventory write-down associated with retiring the program. WP1

The company could stop an early acquisition method once customers had more ways to inspect and buy its glasses. This is a change in how it fulfilled the same customer job. The retirement also prevents the original founding story from being mistaken for the current operating model.

Revenue growth and channel changes occurred together; the filing does not show what sales would have been if Home Try-On had continued.

Rivals Customers can use virtual fitting, visit a store or buy from an alternative optician. The relevant comparison is the convenience and cost of the whole purchase, not loyalty to one channel.
