In 2017, a patient’s treatment history was spread across provider records, insurance claims and other databases. A researcher studying what happened after treatment had to link those fragments before answering the clinical question. Data holders faced privacy obligations and commercial concerns about who could use their records; buying a single dataset left other parts of the patient journey missing. DV1 DV2
Datavant
Datavant made fragmented patient records easier to connect, then combined its software with Ciox’s provider relationships to reach the records themselves.
Arena: Market Conditions Before Datavant
What shaped the outcome
Step 1 of 3 · 2017–21
A shared linking layer gave data owners a reason to participate
Roivant’s September 2017 launch described an AI business for improving clinical trials. By April 2018, Travis May’s stated focus was connecting data while letting institutions control its use. Linking records across organizations could fill gaps that analysis of one organization’s data could not. Datavant sold the connection tools and invited other businesses to supply the analysis. DV1 DV2
That division of work addressed a commercial obstacle as well as a technical one. A data holder could participate without handing its business to a rival data reseller. Doug Fridsma’s later analysis, published by Datavant, explains why a combined data seller and analytics vendor can struggle to recruit competing data suppliers. The company’s early boundary made broad participation more plausible; May reported hundreds of participating organizations by 2021. The benefit depended on having useful counterparties and permission to connect with them. DV3 DV10
Rivals Separate data purchases and internally built links remained alternatives. The consequential difference was a reusable way to link across willing institutions while preserving their control.
Step 2 of 3 · 2021–23
Ciox supplied the operational relationships that software alone could not
Ciox already handled medical-record exchange for healthcare providers. The July 2021 merger brought that service business together with Datavant’s linking technology. In April 2022, Datavant reported that more than 40 health systems, representing about 4,000 hospitals and clinics, had adopted digital release of information; Ciox had retrieved about five million patient requests digitally during the preceding year. DV5 DV6
This supplied a practical route from software to records: sell digital retrieval through an existing service relationship, preserve each provider’s release rules, and handle an authorized request inside the provider’s workflow. Ciox’s relationships and staff were acquired assets. The combined network therefore grew through consolidation as well as adoption. The announced combination carried a $7 billion transaction value and more than $700 million in combined revenue. DV3 DV4
Rivals Hospitals could retain manual retrieval or use other release-of-information vendors. Existing Ciox customers could digitize a familiar workflow without first hiring a completely new intermediary.
Step 3 of 3 · 2025
Aetion expanded the offer and changed the earlier partner boundary
Datavant completed its acquisition of Aetion on July 11, 2025. Aetion added a platform and scientific services for preparing data and generating real-world evidence. CEO Kyle Armbrester said life sciences and ecosystem partners had asked for deeper capabilities across the product lifecycle. The announced offer joined discovery, linkage and privacy work with curation and analysis. DV8 DV9
A customer could now buy more of the work required to turn distributed records into usable evidence from one organization. That expands the revenue opportunity beyond supplying a connection. It also changes the scope of the 2021 promise to leave analytics to others. The earlier positioning helps explain partner recruitment, while the acquisition explains a later move toward a more complete research offering. The combined company now offered analytical work that the earlier model had left to partners. DV3 DV8
Rivals Life sciences companies can assemble specialist data and analytics suppliers themselves or buy a broader solution. Aetion reduces the number of separate steps Datavant leaves to outside providers.
